Dr. Dodson offers his patients metal free fillings which are durable and much more attractive than the traditional metal amalgam fillings of years ago. The traditional silver fillings may have been durable and long-lasting, but they resulted in unattractive, dark colored areas in your mouth. Over time, the amalgam silver fillings could cause serious damage to the structure of your teeth, corroding in the mouth, turning dark and leading to other issues such as fractured teeth, decay beneath the metal, dark lines at the gum line and low-grade metal allergies from the alloyed metals.

The composite in white fillings is a specially-formulated material that looks and functions just like durable, natural tooth enamel. The procedure for a white filling is very similar to that of a silver filling and takes place in just one visit to Dr. Dodson's office.

The Process
- The decayed portions of the tooth must be removed which leaves a hole that needs to be filled to restore the tooth to its original form and function.
- The tooth is prepared and etched with a mild acid solution.
- Then the composite is placed in layers using a light specialized to harden each layer.
- When the process is done, the filling will be shaped to fit the tooth.
- The filling is then polished to prevent staining and early wear.
Dr. Dodson will instruct you on how to take care of your metal free fillings to ensure they last a long time. Keep in mind that alcohol rinses may affect the longevity of a filling. Alcohol is a solvent of resin bonding agents. The result is a softening of the composite material, making it rougher and more prone to staining and early breakdown. Dr. Dodson will recommend that you switch to an alcohol-free rinse after you receive your new fillings.
